The Tesla Model Y Refresh Juniper started shipping just about a month ago and although it has been very well received for its enhancements on the inside, I am more focused on the things you can't see in todays video. Namely, how does this thing do on range in the real world?
I set out to find out for myself, and although there is no perfect way to do a range test these days outside of a lab, I use the same rules with all vehicles, including this new Model Y. The vehicle will be charged to 100%, taken to the highway and driven at 70 MPH, A/C at 69 degrees, no accessories on or used, basic autopilot, and drive until 0%.
My new 2026 Tesla Model Y is a Long Range All Wheel Drive Launch Series, and comes fitted with the 20" upgraded wheels. The base wheels bring the new Model Y to an EPA rated range of 327 miles. The upgraded 20" wheels will bring that rating all the way down to 303 miles. With that in mind, the question is, how close to the rated 303 miles of range will the new Model Y get on the highway?
Our previous Tesla Model Y, a 2021, was able to get right at 270 miles in a similar test. The most recent range test was done last year where I was able to get 259 Miles of real world range using 71 kWh of energy. That brings us to about 3.6 miles/kWh. I expected only marginal improvements from the previous generation, and like most people, have come used to the fact that Tesla's struggle to get their rated range in real world driving.
I was in for quite a surprise when the test concluded as the car not only achieve the EPA rated Range, it actually surpassed it by a hefty margin. This represents a significant shift in how EV's are EPA tested, and how Tesla has come far from the days of missing those numbers in real world driving by a substantial margin. Where we used to at best get 95% of rated range at 70 mph, we are now getting more like 103% of rated range.
The best part about this is that in theory, the 19" base wheels that come on the new Model Y should get you even more range. If it achieves similar results as the 20" wheels did, we could possibly see something like 337 miles of real world range!
