Tesla was supposed to enter India as early as 2016, when it started taking pre-bookings for the Model 3. However, the company never set foot in the Indian market until now. The American EV company, one of the biggest and most popular four-wheeler brands worldwide, is finally set to debut in India. Tesla offers a diverse model portfolio internationally, including the Model 3 and the Utopian Cybertruck. However, reports indicate that Tesla will initially launch the Model Y in India and then expand its offerings.

Sources suggest that Tesla India has already imported six units of the Model Y from its Giga factory in Shanghai, China, in anticipation of quick sales. All Tesla models sold in India will be fully imported, as the company does not plan to establish a manufacturing facility in the near future.

So, what is the Tesla Model Y, and why does it make sense in the Indian context? The Model Y is a fully electric SUV that was the best-selling car worldwide in 2024, with over 1.09 million units sold.
