The company secured lithium iron phosphate batteries from China’s Gotion High-Tech in late 2024, specifically for its electric delivery vans made under an exclusive deal with Amazon. On top of that, Rivian partnered with Samsung SDI in South Korea to bring in a large shipment of batteries for its R1S SUVs and R1T pickup trucks—both built at its plant in Normal, Illinois.

This preemptive buying spree helps Rivian sidestep potential cost hikes from tariffs announced on April 29 by President Trump’s administration, which could raise prices on imported Chinese EV components—including batteries—by up to 25%. By covering upfront costs and coordinating with suppliers to hold U.S.-based inventory, Rivian is trying to protect its production lines and maintain stable pricing as tariff impacts unfold.
